This abby founded in the 10th century, was one of the most important abby's in the low countries.

In the 15th century it was luted and destroyed, during the Spanish occupation, by the troops of emperor Carlos Quito as a punishment for the Ghent citizens who raised up against his oppression. The remains were used to built a military fortress in order to control the city of Ghent.
